Scout Arrival

Scout Arrival

A common question after housing is up and ready to go is, “When will they arrive?” Often Purple Martin hobbyists will open their housing too early in the Spring and try to put up with the invasion of other competitive birds trying to overtake the newfound housing. What to do? The Purple Martin Conservation Association has been conducting the Scout Study for several years.

The Scout-Arrival Study documents the first arriving Purple Martins at nesting sites throughout North America.  Landlords/hobbyists/citizen scientists throughout the breeding range submit their first returning adult and sub-adult to the PMCA.  This information is used to track the spring migration progress of Purple Martins. To find out when Purple Martins arrive in Ontario, check out the Scout Arrival map for your area. You will then be able to participate in this vital study.
